Rave in the Cave is the best race of the year

And if you missed it, well, you're bummed. RF, Roxz and Rusty did it again, like so many years before. XC, HC, DH and a trials/challenge course. I haven't just chilled at race for long time but man there was a lot of sweet stuff going on. The classic caves XC course showed no remorse. I didn't catch all the results but a still on form Cam K. pulled out a 50 second win over KC Tony. Those two rode away from DS by over 5 minutes. The gaps were just as big farther back. The biggest surprise in my book was Tim Farnham asking the question, what gear is too big for SS racing at Cave? He supposedly ran a 34x14. Can I only assume he pushed alot. But the big gear must have done the job.

The afternoon was finished off with fun on the challenge course and fresh log rides we found in woods along the river, 40 foot log rides! Saturday night was all about the good times. Massive jenga fire pit, full moon, DVD's on the big screen, spilunking (?), illegal drinking, good food and tons more.

Coffee and bacon fuelled up the morning and JP rode to a win in HC. Yours truly tied for first with SA in the DH. And somehow, I pulled a clean run out of my butt on the challenge course to win it. Woodman pulled off a full wheelie teeter totter ride, my personal highlight. Tons of video stills on the way.

Thanks Roxz, RF, Rusty and everyone else that helped out. Once again, CAVES IS THE BEST RACE OF THE YEAR, PERIOD. you best be comin round next year, it only gets better.

good race for sure. i found out what happens when you run 6 teeth bigger in the rear cog. dammit. oh well, i wouldn't change a thing, or i'd be suffering even more.

isn't ponca the best race of the year tho???

I brought an extra camp chair home, let me know if it's yours.

i thought platte was the best race of the year? geez, it's so hard to decide...

at any rate, it was one first-rate race, and event. ryan, roxy and resetar (R3) did an incredible job with the promotion. thank you!!

Can someone give me a Sir Wilhelm report? Did he pull a slow start technique or was it a cross style start?

i'd give you the details Jay, but i couldn't see what he was up too from my place at the back of the race.

seems like he went off pretty fast though.

and great race all, that was a super fun time and good to see some ol' familiar faces ... blew my mind to see Tod Sehnert present. wowie zowie.

Sounds like it could be a long cross season.

Why is cave the best? 3 words, FIRE PIT JENGA! It's all about the after party.

Ponca is good, but the camping is really spread out. Platte is good, but no tent camping. Caves has a sweet group camp area where everyone can hang out together. It's just got it all baby!

Wilhelm smoked it off the line but Cam slowly reeled him back in. I don't think it was Tony slowin down as much as Cam speeding up. That guy just finishes crazy fast.

MG said...

... yeah, the start was pretty darn fast. wilhelm ripped our legs off early.

if this is a sign of things to come, tony is working up a pretty impressive head of steam for cross season. it's cool to see him making good on all that natural talent he has.

Several things:
1) L&C is the best race because its about the race, not the camp sites. If you didn't race the whole series you can't disagree.
2) Another blog where you were able to work in bacon and the word sweet, please get some new material, and expand your vocabulary, I can loan you a dictionary if you'd like. Or something to read other than "Bike Magazine".
3) MG has the coolest blog photo of all time, I show it to my wife as a form of foreplay (or is that birth control I can't remember).
4) Tony showed what he can do when he rides a mountain bike without road gearing.
5) At the next race we need to get Cam to piss in a cup.

You have got to admit Shim, the event at the Cave has been taken to a new level. A lot of folks have worked hard to take the event from the TP days to present. You were a foundation of that. After all you came up with the name. It may not be the best single track or your favorite course, but it's the best two day festival in the series!!!

And nobody is touching the fact that MG is no longer using his "Glamour Shot". Did you lose your sponsorship MG?

Mark Savery said...

Awe Shim, you just don't like the cave cuz you actually need skilz to go down the hills fast. It's okay, I'll help you out over the winter.

If L&C was the best race, you wouldn't have to park a mile away on a gravel road and there would actually be more than one spot to pass guys that only know how to ride uphill. Unfortunately, I can disagree since nothings changed at L&C in recent years. Same old same old.

I will continue to use the words "sweet" and "bacon" and probably in the same sentence. Don't mess with me, I live with a SWEET language arts teacher who happens to like BACON!

MG does have the coolest photo, however I do have an appointment at "Glamour Shots" this week.

We should all be scared of Tony going into cross season.

Cam is the real deal.

AND RAVE IN THE CAVE IS STILL THE BEST RACE OF THE YEAR!

SHIM,

Don't be messing with my only entertainment out here at the lake, it is the only thing that keeps me sane.

Anyway, I had you in my sights, and you are going to 'retire' anyway, and one bad season and I will be passin ya.

So just stay off my blog please, your dictonary is just out of date

Over the past several years the trails at Indian Cave have continued to get worse, sure they need work and I shouldn't bitch if I 'm not willing to do someting about them, but as long as the horses continue to do the damage they do screw it. I admit that the camping event was cool, but thats not about the race and Mod if you would have ridden more than a couple of logs and one mile of downhill coasting, (which by the way was not a part of the cc course) you might feel differently. As for your girlfriend, she teaches at an OPS school, what can you really expect (in fact I went there and look how screwed up and bitter it made me).

The IC race was run well as usual, L & C was just a better "Race" god forbid you had to ride your bike a half mile to registration and it wasn't downhill - you lazy Gen X'r.

As for New Blood I don't know who you are and don't care. If your goal is to pass a 43 year old father of four you need to take a hard look at your life.

I hope people don't want a road race on dirt. That's what happened at the world cup level and a bunch of roadies just crossed over and started winning. All the guys with technical skilz went to the back of the results. MTB races should be on difficult trails, at least at the Expert level. If horses beat up the trail a bit, great, Nebraska could use a bit more technical trail. We all like a perfectly groomed piece of singletrack, but there also needs to be some rough as hell trail. Like 8A was last year at caves, it's an equalizer. To win a "series" and find the best all around rider courses need to be different. And we have a pretty good variation. RAVE IN THE CAVE IS JUST THE BEST! What it misses in low speed technical, it makes up for with high speed descents. Like no other course we have.

I can assure you my heart rate was higher in the DH than yours was in the XC. To go fast you don't coast.

Too bad pancakes wasn't teaching when you were in school. Just think what a well rounded open minded young man you could have been.

I better go cook some SWEET honey BACON for breakfast.

yeah, so the glamour shots connection is down... their check bounced when i went to the bizzank monday to cash it for some meth money. oh well...

i completely agree with mod about the L&C race. same ol same ol. it was a race, it wasn't an event like caves was. that's the difference... and shim, if you can't handle those trails on your f/s bike, maybe it is time to retire. it'd be better for me too, 'cuz i'd finish in the money then... :-} you know i don't want you to leave though shim. you're an awesome bike racer, and anyone that uses my picture as a form of foreplay and/or birth control can't be all that bad.

brah, i'm skippin' the bacon, 'cuz one of my homies is pimpin the BISCUITS AND GRAVY, and i'm on the train dude!

word 'em up,

OK Hot Shot here it is lets see yours, and oh by
the way mine was in the red for two hours.

181 max, average 160, elevation gain 3,500 feet.
For the HC we had 350 feet of evelevation gain and a steady hr of 172.

But your HR was probably higher , what with all that salt and fat from all the bacon. You won't be hard to shop for at Christmas, "Bacon of the month club?"

OK now i am bored later,

Mark Savery said...

I'd be bored looking at all those numbers too. I have a hummingbird heart, my max is 204 and I a usually see 199-201 during downhills. I learned to leave the HR monitor at home though.

Did you see Overend podiumed at Mammoth in the pros. He's 50!. There's still hope! (For all of us)

Shim...I have to agree with Mod, Rusty et al...the future of the Psycowpath MTB Series is not traditional XC weekends, but a variety of off-road events...enduros, 3-6-12 marathons and team relays, short tracks, uphill and downhill time trials as well as traditional xc events. I am glad to hear that the Caves weekend was a success and I regret more and more that I was not able to go. Next year, I will make sure I am there.

RF said...

Short-track baby! Sign me up!

Oh, and of course, short track would be SWEET (bacon).

MG said...

i think (bacon) more enduros would be sweet... my fastest lap last saturday was the third. traditional xc races just don't suit my style so much.

i like ridin' bikes!

John Lefler, Jr. said...

That's my (bacon) point. Keep some traditional (sweet) xc races, but take the venues that require a little more drive(bacon)time and maximize the race action. Ponca, Caves...even Platte. Why not have a enduro or team relay at those parks? In my opinion there are a lot of courses that are not used that would be more conducive to (SWEET)xc events. I don't want to go "adventure race guy" on everyone, but some tweaks to format would be good. Bacon.

For the record it was only 32 x 14.

Anyway, that race was definately first rate and I look forward to doing more.

Big props for Ryan and the rest of his crew.
