So. I've been doing the build on the cheap, trying to convince myself that I CAN use older HG/ramped cogs on my SS wheel. Well, the chain jumped about a dozen times in 3 hours of riding this weekend. I've learned to take 'er easy so I don't faceplant across an intersection.
I've adjusted chainline, tension in and out, etc, and had a few pro's check it out... still jumping. And I'm fairly certain its jumping off the side of the cog. So I came up with this idea.
Its my HG/ramped 17t cog, with a "shaved" 24t cog on either side with spacers. Yep, perhaps the world's first "freewheel chainguide". The teeth are ground off & the edges ground smooth, and the theory is that whenever the chain trys to jump to the side, the larger "toothless cog/chainguide" will catch it and dump it back onto the 17t cog. Who's betting against this setup??

What have you got to loose I have things that looked worse then that work grate. You won't know till you try.
Spend $5 and get youself a ss cog.
I did check out a SS cog last night, and I am surprised at how much larger/taller the teeth are than on a HG cog. Makes me think I might simply be pulling the chain over the teeth on the HG cog.
But maybe the worlds first freewheel chain guide will work?
I think it will work. I lent a spacer kit to thewolfman that is the same idea.
Sorry dude, your freewheel chainguides have been tested my many duders before thou. Just like me testing how much coffee it takes to open the brown valve on a Tuesday morning.
$5 ss cog is a wise choice.
You need some spacers give me a shout. that look like you would need a tet. shot to work on it.
