Trail conditions

So who got out on what trails this weekend. T-bone said Manawa is pretty packed down. I guess the snowmobiles have been out on the double track. MIB and Shim have been snow shoeing at Jewell. What else? Tranquility? Swanson? L&C? Riverside?

The skiing at Elmwood was perfect yesterday. More snow is forecast for today. There's good tracks laid down on the west side golf course. The downhills are sweet bacon.

Hey T-bone, are you and Fidel in for some urban snow assault this afternoon? We need to find some sweet jumps!

Looks like perfect snow conditions for XC. I have been thinking about getting some XC Skis. I have done alot of downhill and snowboarding, but never cross country. Any advice? Should I pick up a used set from play it again for the first year?

Fischer Nordic Cruising (Voyager or Explorer) skis are the ideal skis for around here. They're shorter and wider...perfect for out-of-track skiing. Salomon also makes a out-of-track ski called the Snowscape. Waxless and wide would be a good idea since we don't have any groomed trails.

I agree with butch, definitely go wider. I think my Atomics are 45mm wide. You can usually pick up ski/binding/boot package pretty reasonably at one of the big sports stores. If you go waxless, which I would recommend you start with, try and find something that uses the Tacx fish scale waxless base. Mine don't have it and I fight for grip on steeper pitches.

I just got back from Elmwood and it's sweet. The downhills are a blast. Hopefully we'll get another inch tonight.

I'm riding after work (4ish). Fidel has gone missing so I don't know about him. Give me a call if you want to go urban.

Charge up the camera, there's a drop we need to hit at Elmwood. I'll ring ya.

IMO, Manawa is the best for riding. It was packed down when the snow was just right. Swanson isn't bad but the snow is more powder like. I'll post some pictures from yesterdays ride in a minute.
