a weekend of riding on the road

Well the trails are drying. Not supafast but it looks like everyone will be perfect-o for Tranq on April 1.

But with the moisture still on the trails, there was no option but to take out the road bike this weekend. It needed the attention, anyway. So Saturday I rode with Marco, Spence, and the Kaos crew and let them kick the poo outta me for a few hours. I was complaining about the snow keeping me off my bike a bit, cuz I can ride the trainer, but not for hours on end. Well, if you ever think you're training enough, talk to Spence. It snows in March, so what does he do? He wakes up at 4am every morning to ride a trainer for a few hours. Then he rides again at night. What the hell. Rumor also has it that he can down TWO chipotle burritos in one sitting. But he wouldn't take the dare on that Saturday.

Sunday-- wow what a windy day. Out on the road bike, through bellevue to the keystone and back, let Roxy kick the poo outta me. Wow was it windy. Super slow going into the wind, but coming back was 53x14 easy. Fun. Nice to see MOD and splatcakes out on the ride, the Bellevue Blvd is some good riding, no stop signs, trees, wide street. Hope everyone had a decent weekend with some time on the bike.

Saturday, rode down west papio and a couple laps around zorinski with Tim. Sunday, rode same with Doug. Bridges covered with snow on Saturday. Sunday bridges were about half clear. Unfortunately, the bridge on the south side behind the playground bit Doug. He went down hard on his left side and cracked his helmet. I arrived about a minute afterwards, Doug sitting in the path at the end of the bridge with the bike at his feet.

After checking for broken bones, he got up and we rode about a quarter mile to the restroom. by then, Doug had lost his memory of the day. Doug was in a two minute loop of questions. After about the fifth time of answering the same questions, I was worried. Danna picked us up and we met Mary at Lakeside ER. They scanned Doug and he has a concussion. Talking to Doug Monday, he remembers a few things before the crash but nothing afterwards through his time in the ER. They sent him home Sunday with instructions for Mary to wake him a couple times during the night.

He was sore Monday with a swollen left knee and right ankle.

Talking to my sister-in-law, an ER nurse, when Doug exhibited signs of a concussion, I should have called an ambulance. Trauma that causes a concussion can easily cause damage to the neck, especially for Doug who has metal in his neck from a previous break. Fortunately, the crash caused no neck damage.

Even with Doug's helmet on, he had a silver dollar size red mark on his left forehead that was black and blue Monday. Without the helmet, things would have been much worse.

Boys and girls, that experience helped remind me of the fragility of life. Worrying about a friend and his health puts into persective the other lesser worries of life.
