So Doug says, Let's ride gravel roads tonight. uh, ok.
Called Tim at Swanson to ride gravel with us. He said he would rather eat tequila chicken tacos. Seems there's not too much that comes between Tim and chicken.
Dan cancelled the Thursday Tranquility ride because it was too wet. His first night to start leading the ride again and he cancels because of mud, then won't ride gravel in the rain with us - and he says he's a bike shop owner.
Doug and I left the shop in the rain for a gravel road ride.
So we ride north into Washington county and back. Saw some pretty scenery. Reminded me of England for some reason. Low grey clouds, always misting, some heavier rain, glasses fogged over, east wind, shoes full of water; gravel over wet leggings, back of wet shorts, bottom of wet camelbak. I had a rain jacket, Doug was soaked head to toe.
Returned to the shop and dropped our chains (Yea SRAM chain and Power Link!) in the parts cleaner tank and rinsed. Put empty walmart sacks on my van seat to drive home. Rinsed the bike off in the yard, dried it off, lubed (LDP9) brake levers, QR levers, pedals, chain (with Deep Purple - no that was a 70's band; Purple Extreme), hexbolt heads. Stand in front of bathroom sink taking off one piece of clothing at a time, rinsing gravel out of them before throwing in the wash.
Rode a little over 1.5 hrs and spent 1 hour cleaning/lubing bike and prewashing clothes. I wonder why no one will ride gravel roads in the rain with us?
i really wanted to ride swanson last night but with the rain i finally had a chance to finish bleeding brakes and get rox's moab bike built. bout time since we're leaving in less than 48 hours. thanks to the few fellas i called for bleeding advice. i think it all worked out in the end.
Just pulled 'bike' mag out of the mail and read in letters "Most of us need an inspiring kick in the chamois to get us out of the rut we call our favorite singletrack." He was refering to an article about an epic, multiday, selfsustained mtb ride.
Though not epic; cold, snow, rain, heat, darkness can turn a regular ride into something special and memorable. Find a good buddy or two willing to ride along and share the experience and life is good.
that new mag also has a ton geatures on moab, mostly of my old fav trails and some new perspectives on the area. i am so stoked to be going there in 48 hours. Can i trade in my anthem for a giant reign?

I've heard the phrase "rocks in your head" but "gravel in your shorts"... that's a new one.
'gravel in your shorts' I like it!
